Newly recommended Relay is a very high yielding feed wheat. Whilst its yield is 2% behind Santiago no other variety outyields Relay in the western region and it has several agronomic advantages which are likely to make Relay a very popular variety. It performs well when grown as a 1st wheat or a 2nd wheat. It has short, stiff straw, good disease resistance (including a 9 for Yellow Rust and 6 for Septoria Tritici) and has a good specific weight and a high Hagberg for a feed variety, so should produce a quality sample in good years and bad. As a Gladiator cross performance should be consistent and reliable across a range of conditions.
Most of the high yield feed alternatives have poor disease resistance, poor grain quality or both. We have seen how Diego has grown to become such a strong variety in our region because it has consistently produced good yields of quality feed wheat. Relay is a higher yielding alternative and will be a useful variety to grow alongside Diego, or one of the less robust high yielders like Santiago or Coqueror.
